Signing Alexis Sanchez a mistake – ex-Arsenal defender Silvestre

Ex-Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre has hit out at his former club for signing Alexis Sanchez, claiming that the Gunners already possess plenty of players just like the Chile World Cup star.

Sanchez, who failed to make the 2014 Goal 50 this week, recently completed his €40 million move to the Emirates from Barcelona in a transfer that has excited many fans.

But Silvestre, who played for Arsenal from 2008 to 2010 after almost a decade at Manchester United, is not impressed.

“Arsenal have already got that type of player – quick, sharp, fast – they have enough of them already in Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla,” Silvestre told Goal.

“What they really need is someone like Olivier Giroud, I think that should be their priority at the moment.

“Sanchez could have gone anywhere after his tremendous World Cup but I do not think he is the type of player the club need right now.”

Silvestre, who was capped 40 times by his country and went to two World Cups, also commented on the rising star of French football – Paul Pogba – who finished 38th in the Goal 50.

“He is 21 and he has consistently been doing well over the [last couple of] years,” the 36-year-old noted.

“The way he has been playing for Juventus is very impressive. In the near future he will be a force for France.”
